Yes. We created this service to help more homeowners confidently begin their projects and avoid the uncertainty that often causes delays.
Am I obligated to purchase materials from The Rusty Shovel?
Not at all. Our goal is to provide clarity and direction so you can make the best decision for your home. Having said that, our experience has been that when we provide great service and great advice, you’re more likely than not to choose us for your material purchases.
What types of projects qualify?
Patios, retaining walls, artificial turf, underground sprinklers, drainage solutions, landscape lighting, water features, outdoor living spaces, and more.
What if my project requires full design work?
If your project calls for detailed landscape design, Alicia Putz with Thrive Landscape Design works out of our offices and we’ll happily provide a smooth transition to start work with her.
How long does the consult take?
Most on-site visits take about 60–90 minutes, depending on the scope of your project.
Are there projects that aren’t a good fit for this?
Since we’re a supply shop, if your project is primarily skidsteer or labour only, that’s not the best fit for us – but we’re always happy to have a conversation to find out for sure.

Our Project Consult Professionals
Joey Lavoie has been in the landscape business for over 15 years. He’s worked as a landscape contractor and in landscape supply.
He has a passion for the landscape industry and loves to use his experience to help people create their ideal space, within their budget, using the proper products and construction techniques.
Having been a contractor, he helps homeowners and contractors communicate to execute on their ideas successfully.
Ryan Riffel has a strong background in sales, account management and the landscape industry. He entered the landscape business from the installation side, managing sales and installation teams. He’s got a wealth of experience helping translate homeowner wants and needs to installation teams – a skill that translates very well to our Project Consult Service.
